1.表示可能性
（1）表示说话者主观猜测的可能性时，
can/could常用于否定句和疑问句中。
could既可以表示过去的可能性，又可以表示现在的可能性，其语气更弱一些。
例:Whos the man over there? Is it Mr.Black?
It can be him.Hes much taller.
can用于否定句中，表示推测。
例:Could he still be alive after all this
time?
could用于疑问句中，表示推测，这里不表示时态。
（2）can用于肯定句中时表示理论上的可能性，即从理论上看有可能，但实际未必会发生。有时指一时的情况，常意为“有时会”。
例:Even experienced teachers can
make mistakes.
（3）can/could have done表示对过去发生的事情的推测。can have done主要用于疑问句和否定句中。
例:Could Jim have mistaken me for my sister Kelly?
例:They can have finished the work
that soon.
2.表示能力
can一般指体力、知识、技能等方面的能力，即“能够，会”，could表示过去的能力。否定式can /couldn 意为“不能，不会”。
（1）表示现在的能力
例:Don worry.Ill do what I can to help you.
例:Can you speak English?
No,I can .
（2）表示过去的能力
例:She could play the violin when she was five.
例:I couldn finish the work yesterday, but Ill finish it today.
注意:当表示将来的能力时，一般用 will be able to ,而不用can。
例:Will you be able to record the lecture tomorrow?
3.表示请求或允许
（1）用could比用can更加迟疑不决，当没有把握得到允许或需要委婉表达时用 could。（could语气更委婉，显得更礼貌一些。）
例:Could I take this seat,sir,if you don mind?
例:You can phone me after six this afternoon.
（2）当允许别人做某事时，答语用can而不用could。
例:Could I use your cell phone for awhile?
