I can. You can. Everybody can.
上一节，我们讲了中学英语必须掌握的 7 组情态动词，从本篇文章开始，我们将深入了解这些情态动词的用法。今天，我们先看看最熟悉的 can 的用法。
can 表示能力，可以是智力上的，也可以是体力上的，意为“会、能”：
He can sing and dance. 他会唱歌，也会跳舞。
Can you work it out? 你能做出来吗？
I can speak Spanish. 我会说西班牙语。
can 表示有机会，有可能性：
He can have finished his work. 他不可能已经完成了工作。
Where can it be? 会在哪儿呢？
It can be Mr. Green. 那不可能是格林先生。
This sofa can be out of place in your living room. 这个沙发放在你的客厅里会显得不协调。
can 用于询问，以表达请求，在口语中, 也就是在比较随便的时候，常用“can”代替比较正式的“may”：
Can you help me? 能帮个忙吗？
Can you pass me the remote？能把遥控器给我吗？
Can you wait till this afternoon? 你就不能等到下午吗？（can =cannot=can not）
can 的过去式 could，表示“过去能，过去会”
He could swim very well when he was nine. 他九岁就能游的很好。
She couldn find her handag. 他找不到自己的包。
【重点】could 用于现在时，表示一种拘谨、礼貌的语气，用 could 表达请求，显得彬彬有礼，同时也显得生分。此时的 could 并不是 can 的过去式：
Could I have those two tickets? 我能卖那两张票吗？
Could you do me a favor? 您能够帮我个忙吗？
【重点】can 和 be able to 的不同：be able to 因为含有 be 动词，be 又有各种变化，所以 be able to 可以用于各种时态，同时 be able to 显得慎重，can 显得随便。
I was able to find out his adress.
I will be able to see my grandma soon.
be able to 用过去式，表示此事已经做成，这和 could 不同：
He was able to fly over the mountain. 他得以飞过那座山。
He could climb over the wall. 他当时能翻过墙。（翻没有？不知道）
