Adding Feet to a Snake

One day, Mr. Lion holds a party. Many animals come and drink a lot of wine.At last there is a pot of wine. Who can drink it? They think out an idea anddecide to have a match-Draw a snake. If you finish first, you can get it.

Soon Mr. Wolf finishes drawing. “Yeah, I’ve finished. I’m No.1,” he says. But he draws again and says, “Oh, let me add feet to my snake.” At the time, Mr.Gorilla also finishes. He takes away the pot of wine and drinks, and then hesays, “That isn’t a snake. Snakes have no feet. I get the wine.”

THE BOILED BLACK ROCK - HONEY SYRUP

Once upon a time, a man was boiling black rock-honey syrup, when a rich mancame to his house. He thought he would give the syrup to the rich man. He poureda little water into it and put it on a slow fire. He then fanned it with a fanin the hope of cooling it.

A bystander addressed to him, "If you don't put out the fire below, how canyou cool it even though you keep on fanning?"

People began to laugh at him.

This is like the heretics who will practice a little mortification bysleeping on thorny brambles without putting out the flames of annoyance. As thefive passions are still blazing within them, there is no way for such people tobecome cool and quiet. As a result, they sardonically laughed at by the wise. Moreover, they will suffer affliction in their present lives and transmigrationin the future.

THE WIFE PRETENDS TO BE DEAD

Once upon a time there was a stupid man who loved very much his beautifulwife. However, she had no true love for him. In the meantime, she associatedherself surreptitiously with another man. Burning with lecherous passions, shewanted to leave her husband to be with her lover. She secretly told an oldwoman, "After my departure, I would like you to place a woman's corpse in myhouse. You then tell my husband that I'm dead."

The old woman did what she was told. She told the husband shortly after hisreturn that his wife passed away. He went to see the corpse and believed it wasthat of his own wife. He grieved and wept bitterly. He gathered a great deal ofwood and oil together for the cremation. Then he put the ashes into a bag andhad it with him day and night.

Shortly after, the wife got tired of her lover. She came back and told herhusband, "I'm your wife."

The husband answered, "My wife died a long time ago. Who are you to lie tome that you are my wife?" The husband refused to believe her, in spite of herrepeated explanations.

So are the heretics who, having learned the heretical doctrine, confusedlystick to it with all their soul and take the doctrine to be the right onewithout altering their mind forever. Thus they will be unable to believe, acceptor keep any other creed even it is an orthodox one.

A singing-bird was confined1 in a cage which hung outside a window, and hada way of singing at night when all other birds were asleep. One night a bat cameand clung2 to the bars of the cage, and asked the bird why she was silent by dayand sang only at night. "I have a very good reason for doing so," said the bird:"it was once when I was singing in the daytime that a fowler was attracted by myvoice, and set his nets for me and caught me. Since then I have never sungexcept by night." But the bat replied, "It is no use your doing that now whenyou are a prisoner. If only you had done so before you were caught, you mightstill have been free."

Precautions3 are useless after the event.

According to legend, there was a kind of birds called "dais" (swallow) onthe East China Sea.

The Yidais were slow in reaction. They could not fly very high and seemedclumsy andincapable1.

But when they moved about, they always moved in groups, depended on oneanother for survival, and flew and landed together.

When they advanced, no one dared to advance rashly. When they retreated, noone dared to fall behind at will. When they fed, no one dared to scramble2 to bethe first. All their activities were orderly.

When they went into action,万 dais always acted uniformly without anydisorder3. They depended upon the collective efforts to avoid any harm from theoutside world.
