中国铁矿山中国铁矿资源比较丰富，1982年末已探明的保有储量443亿吨，其中工业储量占总储量的54％,居于世界前列。中国铁矿资源主要分布在辽宁、河北、四川、山西、内蒙古、甘肃、山东、广东等省、自治区。其特点是：贫矿多，难选矿多，多金属矿多。在总储量中含铁50％以上的富矿只占5.7％，贫矿占94.3％,而在贫矿储量中容易选别的磁性铁矿占68％，难选的红矿占32％。含多种金属的铁矿约有100多亿吨,主要伴生着钒、钛、铌、铜、铅、锌、钨、锡、钼、镍、钴、金、铀、硼、硫、磷和稀土元素等。这些特点，一方面给开采、选矿处理增加了一定的困难，另一方面为多金属回收利用提供了广阔前景。中华人民共和国成立以来,随着冶金工业的发展,铁矿开采得到了很大的发展。铁矿石产量1949年仅59万吨，1952年达到429万吨，1962年发展到2578万吨,1972年达到8460万吨,1983年达到11339万吨,1952～1983年,平均每年递增11.14％。重点矿山由建国初期的9个，到1983年已发展到33个，矿石产量达到8500余万吨。这些重点矿山主要有辽宁的鞍山、本溪，河北的迁安、邯郸，内蒙古的白云鄂博，湖北的大冶，安徽的马鞍山，四川的攀枝花，广东的海南等，而中小型矿山则遍布全国各地，约有 500余个。其中海南铁矿是中国唯一的大型富铁矿。铁矿山生产装备水平有很大提高，由建国前的手工作业逐步发展为小型机械作业，进而到大型机械作业，到80年代初已有几个大型露天矿山开始采用了牙轮钻机,8立方米以上的大型电铲，南芬露天矿还使用了百吨级的电动轮汽车等70年代水平的装备。选矿加工生产，建国前是空白，到1983年已拥有32个重点骨干选矿厂，其铁精矿年产量达到3015万吨。选矿方法由单一的磁选发展为浮选、焙烧磁选、强磁选、重选和重、磁、浮联合流程选矿。磁选精矿含铁品位突破68％，达到国际先进水平。
