Μ介子μ介子是一种带负电，质量为电子207倍的基本粒子，寿命2.20微秒。由于它的质量比电子大许多，所以能够同原子核更接近，而它带的负电可以屏蔽原子核的正电，使得原子核之间的斥力减小，能够更接近，这样，就不需要严格的超高温或者体积限制。不过这种方式在目前的技术上还难以突破，很难让μ介子进入原子核周围的轨道，而且它的寿命太短暂，所以以它为催化剂的聚变必须非常快才行，此外目前制造μ介子的代价也过于昂贵。美国洛斯阿拉莫斯科学实验室（los alamos national laboratory）科学家研制成一种新仪器，可以利用因宇宙射线与地球大气碰撞而形成的基本粒子——μ介子发现核材料偷运者，它能在短短的一分钟内发现隐藏在厢式货运汽车中宽度仅为10厘米的方块铀材料。每分钟射到每平方米地球表面上的μ介子大约有1万个，当μ介子与原子核相碰撞时，它会偏离自己的原始轨迹，偏离程度取决于原子核的质量。例如，10厘米水可以迫使具有中等能量的μ介子改变方向只有0.1°，而同样厚度的铅却能迫使μ介子偏离原始方向整整1°。洛斯阿拉莫斯科学实验室研究小组在装有金属部件的箱子上面放有两个60厘米矩形μ介子检测器，另一对μ介子检测器被安放在箱子的下面。从天空中射来的μ介子先穿过安放在箱子上面的两个μ介子检测器，由这一对μ介子检测器确定μ介子的行进方向，然后μ介子又会穿过下面一对μ介子检测器，再测出μ介子偏离原始方向的程度，最后这些数据可用来建立箱子内部物体的三维模型。
