光探测器利用光与物质的各种相互作用把光能转换为其他可感知量的各种器件的总称。按照所利用的相互作用区分，目前有三大类。利用光子效应 光子效应种类很多。应用最广的有三种，即光电导、光生伏打效应和光电发射效应。前两种统称为内光电效应（见固态光电探测器），后一种称为外光电效应（见光电效应、光电管和光电倍增管）。此外尚有光电磁效应、丹培效应、光子牵引效应及定位相互作用（例如红外量子计数器、荧光屏及照相底片）等。利用热效应 简称热探测器。它们基于辐射的加热效应引起的材料温度的变化及由此引起的材料特性的变化。其特点是灵敏度与波长无关，即无选择性；大多数响应速度慢，约在毫秒数量级。主要热效应有辐射热电导效应、热释电效应及温差电效应。其他尚有热磁效应、能斯脱效应及利用气体热膨胀效应的高莱管和充气电容微音器等。利用波的相互作用 这类探测器利用入射辐射的电磁场与一个参考辐射的电磁场在光敏材料中的相互作用。主要有光学外差探测及光学参量效应。光学外差探测利用一个频率与被测相干辐射的频率相近的参考激光辐射在探测元件（通常由光电导材料、光生伏打材料或光电发射材料制成）中与被测辐射混频而产生差频。光学外差探测只受到散粒噪声的限制，因而探测率比直接探测或零差探测高几个数量级。参量效应可利用相干辐射在双折射晶体（例如 KDP、LiNbO3等）中的混频来增强被测弱信号或将其频率转换至容易探测的波段。例如人们可以利用 Ag3AsS3、HgS、Ag3SbS3及ZnGeP2等晶体及1.06μm的参考激光，通过上转换（和频）将10.6μm的辐射转换为可见光。参考书目R.J.Keyes,ed., Optical and InfRared Detectors,Springer-Verlag, Berlin, Heidelberg,New York,1977.
