西湖风景名胜区中国著名风景名胜区。位于浙江省杭州市区西侧。古称上湖，唐后始称西湖。原为小海湾，宝石山构成其北翼岬角，吴山为其南翼岬角。由于长江、钱塘江带来的泥沙不断堆积,河口沙坎日益填高,因而成为内湖。历经唐白居易、宋苏轼、明杨孟瑛等对西湖大规模的疏浚，得以免遭湮废。湖南北长3.3公里，东西宽2.8公里，周长约15公里，面积包括湖中洲岛约6平方公里,其中水面为5.66平方公里。由白堤和苏堤将湖面分割成几部分；二堤之间的广大湖面称西湖，白堤和孤山以北湖面称北里湖，苏堤以西的湖面称西里湖，玉带桥以北到岳坟沿岸称岳湖,花港公园以南称小南湖。西湖平均水深1.5～1.8米，流域面积21平方公里。注入西湖溪涧有金沙涧、友泓涧、赤山泉和长桥溪等，蓄水量在控制水位7.15米时为1100万立方米。调节水位的出水口，一是湖东侧的涌金闸，经浣纱路地下管道泄水入城河；一是湖东北隅的圣塘闸，泄水入运河，使西湖无旱涝之虞，四时充满碧水。西湖的景色随四季、朝暮、晴雨而不同，变幻莫测，各有风姿。 登上葛岭的初阳台、 孤山的日照阁及吴山、玉皇山等处，举目眺望，西湖全景尽收眼底。沿湖园林毗连，花木繁茂，景色如画,主要风景点有①湖滨区:湖滨公园、柳浪闻莺。②湖中区：三潭印月、湖心亭、白堤、断桥、平湖秋月、孤山、放鹤亭、中山公园、文澜阁、西泠印社、苏堤。③北山区：宝石山、保俶塔、初阳台、紫云洞、黄龙洞、曲院风荷、夕照山、岳庙和岳坟、玉泉，西至灵隐寺、 天竺。④西山区： 花港公园、刘庄、龙井。⑤南山区：吴山、玉皇山、动物园、虎跑、满觉陇、石屋洞、水乐洞、烟霞洞,净慈寺经过整修,已重现"南屏晚钟"景观。⑥钱江区：六和塔、九溪十八涧、五云山、云栖、梅家坞。此外，还准备以南宋故宫遗址为重点，新辟故宫公园；梵天寺遗址改建成南宋文物陈列室，突出历史文化景观。杭州西湖不仅是中国人民游憩之所，而且是国际友人向往的游览胜地。
