科学创造贯穿于科学发现和发明过程中的创新活动，如设计新的观察和实验,建立新的科学模型,提出新的概念、假说和研制新的产品等等。人类的创新能力是在历史的实践中形成和发展的。创造活动过程的研究早已受人重视，从19世纪末以来,就有人开始调查、统计科学家的创造活动,作比较具体的研究，并注意到想象、直觉或灵感在科学创造活动中的重要作用。1924年英国学者G.华莱士(1858～1932)把人的创造过程概括为 4个时期：①准备期，包括确定研究主题、作物质和技术准备、进行试验性的探索；②孕育期，即思想上的准备期；③顿悟期或明朗期，指直觉或灵感的显现；④检验期，即进行逻辑的和实验的验证。此后，思想上的孕育期和顿悟期通常被看作创造过程的精华,但由于直觉或灵感不能通过逻辑推理获得,因而给人们造成一种印象，似乎创造过程仅仅是无意识的、非理性的，甚至把创造过程的特点片面地归结为直觉。科学创造是一个复杂的思维过程，它最能充分地体现出人的主观能动作用。新思想、新方案的突然出现，即所谓直觉或灵感的来到,实际上是思维过程的飞跃,这种飞跃表面上看来似乎是在无意识状态中发生的，但实际上却是过去的思维过程的一种特殊的继续，而且常常由某种偶然的类比、联想所提供的信息作为触发剂，造成原来逻辑思维的中断，使头脑中原有信息得到一种新的加工和改组，从而导致一种新颖的见解。新思想的出现会使人在心理上有豁然开朗之感，使认识获得新的起点。然而，新思想一般是朦胧的、不清晰的，为了判断这种直觉性的思想是否正确，认识必须沿着一种新的思路重新进入逻辑思维的轨道，并且进行实验的验证。历史的事实表明，直觉虽然可导致重大的发明创造，但也常常导致种种没有根据的或不合乎实际的、因而被淘汰的想法。从已有研究可以看出，创造性活动并非是无意识的和非理性的，它很可能是一种综合逻辑和非逻辑的各种思维形式的最集中、最积极、最活跃的活动。它的机制和本质还有待于进一步的探讨。科学创造活动并不局限于孤立的个人，它具有复杂的社会性。它总是在一定的科学背景以及社会的经济、政治、思想条件下进行的。然而，科学创造不能只是适应这种背景，而往往要改造和突破这些背景的束缚，并为这种改造和突破付出相当的代价。科学创造这一课题需要多种学科对它进行综合研究，科学学、社会学、生理学、心理学以及哲学等许多学科已把它作为自己的一个重要研究课题。20世纪50年代以后还出现了创造学这样的专门学科，从事研究发明创造的规律。
